A White Paper was issued last week that commits the UK Government to requiring all outputs (i.e. research publications and data) from research funded by the public sector to be made available on an Open Access (i.e. free at the point of use) basis.
The paper also includes the statement that “as an immediate step, we have asked the Research Councils to ensure the researchers they fund fulfil the current requirements [to deposit published articles or conference proceedings in an open access repository at or around the time of publication”.
Brunel already supports Open Access via the OA Publishing Fund and BURA, the institutional open access repository (available at:
http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/
) and is therefore well placed to respond to the outcomes of the White Paper.
